A R Rahman delights at the CWG opening ceremony
All those who had any misgivings about A R Rahman’s Commonwealth Games theme song ‘Jeeyo Utho Badho Jeeto’ got their answer on Sunday night when the prodigious composer and singer gave a rocking performance at the opening ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The gala evening had India showcasing its 5000 years of history, its rich culture and diversity in a ceremony that lasted close to four hours. Singer Hariharan opened the ceremony with his welcome song ‘Swagatam’.

Dressed in white sherwani over black trousers, Rahman closed the ceremony with an electrifying performance of ‘Jeeyo Utho Badho Jeeto’ followed by his Oscar winning song ‘Jai Ho!’ from Slumdog Millionaire.

Rahman was greeting with loud cheers from the crowd, and he did not fail to delight. His performance of ‘Jeeyo Utho Badho Jeeto’ was accompanied by folk dances from across the length and breadth of India, and Jai Ho! set the stands on fire.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was packed with around 60,000 spectators all of which enjoyed Rahman’s powerful rendition that was well complemented by fireworks in the sky.
