Shiney was arrested on March 30 after a Sewri court held him guilty of raping his maid at his Oshiwara residence in 2009. After a legal battle in which he was told to stay out of Mumbai, Shiney was convicted on the basis of DNA evidence.
However, last month, the actor had appealed against the conviction in Bombay High Court and was granted bail last week but had to stay in the jail for six more days because of legal formalities.
On Tuesday, Shiney walked out and hugged his wife Anupam Ahuja who has unflappably stood by Shiney’s side and maintained that her husband is “innocent”.
Shiney was granted bail last week after his lawyer argued that the maid herself had changed her statement and not stuck by her earlier claim of rape and that the DNA lab was not accredited. Moreover, just from semen and blood samples a conclusive evidence of sexual intercourse or rape could not be established, argued the defence.
