Delhi Belly - Music Review

Musical outburst - it’s whacky and phenomenal

When we first heard the song Bhaag Bhaag DK Bose from the film Delhi Belly there was only one word that came to our mind, “Whacky!” Now as the song’s madness has rubbed off on us, we wonder what’s next? The album of Delhi Belly, Aamir Khan’s latest production, is out, and it comes loaded with eight songs.

Music director Ram Sampat is back after a hiatus, and we can’t understand why the composer, who had given musical hit like Khakee, was in oblivion for so long. Now he is back and has teamed up with the lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya for the film Delhi Belly and has already given us two jhatkas - first with Bhaag Bhaag DK Bose and the second with Dil Ko Kiya Penchar.

So, let’s unlock the madness inside the Delhi Belly album that has eight songs and according to Aamir Khan all are gems. But we will better make our own judgment. Now, going straight to the album.

The album hits the ground running with the crazy rock fusion number Bhaag Bhaag DK Bose. The song is all we had never expected. Ram Sampath himself wields the microphone for the song, which is an out-and-out superhit track. But what remains with you is not the music but its whacky lyrics, which of course means nothing but are still catchy. The effect of the song especially on the youngsters is superb and will undoubtedly help in the promotion of the film.

Next is what we love to call the Penchar song. The song Nakkadwale Disco Udharwaley Khisko is another great offering from the album. The video of the song has started doing the rounds and people have liked what they saw. Imran as pita hua ghazal maestro singing Dil Ko Kiya Penchar had us in splits.

Saigal Blues, the sad romantic song calling a girl a kasai is nothing but funny at its core, and has given its due respect to the legendary K L Saigal. And once again words have won over music. Lend your ears to the song and you will know what we mean. The song with slight influence from the contemporary music is a must-hear number, crooned by Chetan Shashital.

Singer Sona Mohapatra gets to belt out Bedardi Raja which has a rustic flavor. But the song is robust as well as sensuous to hear. The track can easily remind many of the all-time favourite hit Jhumka Gira Re. Ram has kept the song simple with no extra beats here and there, and also no zappy interludes. That’s why we specially like this song with its tanginess. The album also has Bedardi Raja (Grind Mix) which sounds very much like an item song loaded with electronic music. Gosh! My ears are buzzing with beats. Guess this is the song for which Aamir is searching an item girl.

Suraj Jagan is back and yet again yells out Jaa Chudail. We know most of the boys can relate to the song, and we can even empathize with them, but the song, inspired from retro music, is a bit too harsh on the ears. The song will have few takers and it’s a bit of a letdown too.

Next for you is a real, soft, romantic track. Yes the album also features a slow number. Now, as half of the album has passed by we may conclude that the film is going to be high on dramatic situations, and the songs too are strictly situational. The romantic song Tera Siva with Tarannum Malik and Ram Sampath is no different from what we generally get to hear in Bollywood.

Singer Keerthi Sagathia with his screaming vocals has delivered Switty Tera Pyar Chaida. The song, again a situational track with Punjabi lyrics, gives the film a Delhi flavour. Though you have heard passionate songs, you would have never heard a passionate comical track. So here is Switty Tera Pyar Chaida, the song also has the Punk remix version. I can imagine young guys playing this song on full volume in their cars.

Oh! now the girls can rejoice too. Here is the track which every girl can make her anthem. I Hate You (Like I love You) bustles with ‘the’ female attitude. Sona Mohapatra has once gain delivered a terrific track.

We are done with 10 tracks of Delhi Belly, an album with a difference. The lyrics seem to be bold at times and crass too, but that’s the USP of the album that has instantly clicked with the listeners, though some may find the album a bit monotonous.

None can’t ignore that the album has this eccentric approach, but brownie points to the lyricist and the composer, who dared to think out of the box to come up with this extraordinary album that has shaken and stirred our emotions, and left our heart squarely ‘penchared’.

The winners in the album - Bhaag Bhaag DK Bose, Nakkadwale Disco Udharwaley Khisko and Bedardi Raja.
