Abhay Deol feels item songs are more a marketing gimmick than a creative pursuit

Abhay Deol has carved his own little niche in the Hindi film industry. Known for his disdain for cinema that gives precedence to commerce over art, the actor has his own take on item songs.

According to Abhay, the item songs which are seen in almost every film nowadays are just marketing gimmicks with set formulas.

“It is like if you have to promote your film then you need to have an item number. It is about money, but one must not forget creativity. I don't find much originality in item songs because you remix old tracks or have a basic hip-hop beat, or you will have hip-hop dancers. And now of course trend is you want white women in the background and the lead stars in the middle,” Abhay Deol is quoted as saying by a news agency.

Abhay has himself sung a song and danced in his upcoming film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. So is he open to doing item songs?

“You never know... never say never. I am open to doing item songs as long as it works for the film. But I would at least try and make the effort of making the number a bit more interesting and original in terms of visualising and placement,” Abhay said.

Abhay added that he doesn’t like dancing.

“Dancing, I don't like. It is not something I really want to do. I don't mind trying singing....But dancing?” he wondered.
