Aarakshan banned in Uttar Pradesh
Prakash Jha’s film Aarakshan won’t be released in UP

Prakash Jha’s film Aarkashan, which has already kicked up minor controversies because of its topical subject, has now been banned in Uttar Pradesh.

The Mayawati government apparently feels that the film’s content can spark a law and order situation in the state.

The official press release issued on Wednesday night in Lucknow stated: “The decision to ban the film was taken after prolonged discussion and debate on the movie after it was viewed by a high-level committee of top officials of the state.”

Aarakshan is based on the issue of caste-based reservations in education system. The film features Amitabh Bachchan as an idealist college principal, Saif Ali Khan as a dalit teacher and Prateik Babbar as a student from a well-heeled family.

“After due deliberations, the high-level committee came to the conclusion that several exchange of dialogues between different characters in the film were quite provocative and could incite civil disorder and violence,” the statement added.

The press release also said that some dialogues could provoke people to commit crime.

“Some of the dialogues were potentially so dangerous that they could even provoke a person to commit some crime; hence in the larger interest of maintenance of law and order, peace and tranquillity, the decision to ban the film,” the release said.

Earlier, Amitabh Bachchan and Prakash Jha were barred from promoting Aarakshan in Lucknow. Now comes the ban. The ban could be a financial blow to the distributors as Prakash Jha’s films often do well in North India, UP being its most populous state.

The movie is slated to release on August 12.
