Mausam - Music Review
When an actor like Pankaj Kapur dons a director’s cap, the outcome is Mausam. The yet-to-release romantic film has struck a chord with the audience, and that’s because of its fresh and wonderful songs.

The credit goes to the maverick music director Pritam, who shuns his Bollywood tinted expertise to come up with an out of the ordinary score. Lyricist Irshad Kamil also joins the composer for this musical album.

The first offering is the lively number Rabba Mein To Marr Gaya Oye which continues to air on our TV sets. We can almost feel how a juvenile Shahid Kapoor is in puppy love with the mohalla’s beautiful girl Sonam Kapoor. Is there anything else a lover can do besides dying (not literally) in moments of besotted craziness? As the story is set in the heartland of Punjab, the music is soused in Punjabi flavor and this time we do not hate it as our ears relish the soothing quasi-folk music.

It’s dramatic! Saj Dhaj Ke starts with women singing at a girl’s marriage and then suddenly Shahid Kapoor takes over, entertaining others with his dance and costume. A purely situational track composed aesthetically and shot perfectly. What bowled us over in the picturised song was Sonam Kapoor’s innocent look. She was just too into the character. The two remixes of Saj Dhaj Ke are not worth mentioning.

The next in the line is Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi delivered fervently by Hans Raj Hans. It’s impossible for anyone to be not taken over by this particular song. The feeling is so ardent. Jab Jab Chaha Tune Raj Ke Rulaya/Jab Jab Chaha Tune Khul Ke Hasaya…Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi, Irshad Kamil’s lines in the song are so singed with unwavering flame of love that it’s hard to leave this track. And, considering Pritam’s past repertoire we know he can easily pull off such a heart-wrenching number. Don’t we!

The Reprise version in Shahid Mallya’s voice is also first-rate like its original. There is another treat for the music lovers; the song has a special version sung by the celebrated Wadali Brothers. The song is Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi Mehfil Mix. This incredible track shouldn’t be missed, savour it to the hilt.

The matter gets serious with Poore Se Zara Sa Kam Hain which can send you in a trance. The classic number in the voice of Rashid Khan is deeply immersed in sentiments of love; the parched heart is longing for lost love. Isn’t this feeling familiar to all!

Aag Lage Us Aag Ko by Karsan Das Sargathia is another situational track. The song with festive spirit won’t find a place in your new playlist because it’s too loud.

The other song is thankfully not on a serious note; Mallo Malli crooned by Tochi Raina is a great party number. Yes, though the song is quintessentially Punjabi, it’s high on beats, making it perfect for a hang-out. Mallo Malli by Lehmber Hussainpuri and Hard Kaur is another enthusiastic version. Footloose!

Any love story without touching ballads and moving ditties is incomplete. Director Pankaj Kapur didn’t let this happen to his love story that is beyond romance. It’s apparent that he was least worried about the audience and critical response and cared most about the theme of his film. As a result, Mausam songs won’t leave you gushing, instead will entice you gradually and make you go through a series of emotions.

Our favourites in the album: Rabba Mein To Marr Gaya Oye, Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi and Mallo Malli
