Shahrukh Khan’s Don 2 is setting records at the box office

Shahrukh Khan’s Don 2 has now collected close to $3.3 million at the box office in the United States making it the highest grossing Bollywood movie in North America.

A weekend ago, Don 2 had broken the record for the biggest opening week for a Bollywood movie in North America collecting $2.64 million. The record had been previously held by another Shahrukh Khan film ‘My Name Is Khan’ which had opened to a whopping $2.55 million in 2010.

SRK’s Don 2 has now surpassed the collections of the Hrithik Roshan starrer ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, which had created a flutter at the box office by becoming the first Hindi movie to cross the $3 Million mark in North America.

In comparison, in 2006, Don had collected $1.1 Million at the US box office in its opening week and had gone on to collect a total of around $2.2 Million during its run.

Things don’t look much different in the United Kingdom; Don 2 opened well and became just the 5th Hindi movie to cross the £1 million mark in the opening weekend (all time). SRK’s Ra.One and Salman Khan’s Bodyguard had both crossed the opening weekend £1 million mark at the box office in 2011.

Back at home, 'Don 2' inches closer to Rs. 100 crore mark. Its ten-day collection stand at a little over Rs. 94 crore. The film raked in a decent Rs. 75 crore in its first week and added another Rs. 19 crore to its kitty over the second weekend which began on Friday with a collection of Rs. 4.45 crore that rose to Rs. 6 crore on Saturday and spiked to Rs. 8.55 crore on Sunday, the first day of 2012.

What’s amazing is that of all the biggies at the international box office for 2011, it is Farhan Akhtar who walks away with the kudos for the two biggest films. In Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Farhan was lauded for his acting (and who can forget the shayari) and in Don 2, Farhan has given us a slick, stylized action film, setting a new benchmark for film-making in India.

Salman Khan may be the “KING” of the box office in India, but it sure looks like Shahrukh Khan rules the world!
