The first major release of 2012, Players has failed to secure a good opening at the box office. The movie will need a huge turnaround in its collections to keep itself from flopping.
Released at over 2000 screens in India, Abbas-Mastan’s desi and official remake of The Italian Job, Players opened to a lacklustre response from the audiences on Friday. Despite the film boasting of names like Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Neil Nitin Mukesh, it could only get a below-average response of 25 percent at theatres. At some centres the response was as low as 5 percent.
The first day collection of the movie is expected to be even less than Rs. 5 crore, which is shockingly low for a film that has been extensively promoted and widely released.
A lot now depends on the film’s business on Saturday and Sunday. Only a huge turnaround in fortune could save Players from emerging as a loss incurring proposition for the distributors who have shelled out huge money to acquire the theatrical rights.
As far as the critics are concerned, the film has got mixed reviews; with the exception of two-three critics almost everyone agrees that the film falls below expectations.
Now, it remains to be seen if the film manages to have a face-saving Rs. 15 crore nett first weekend.
The only silver lining so far is the lack of any major competition for Players until January 26 when Agneepath, starring Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt will hit the theatres.
Till then, Godspeed! |
