Of the four releases, the Shiney Ahuja-starrer Ghost leads the race with the first-day collection of Rs. 50 lakh. Second in the running is the multi-starrer crime comedy Chaalis Chauraasi which made Rs. 35 lakh. The response to both Sadda Adda and Tutiya Dil was dismal, with just Rs. 5 lakh worth business for each on the first day.
Meanwhile, the last week’s release Players showed a steady decline in its first week run at theatres. After grossing a little less than Rs. 15 crore in the opening weekend the film managed to add only Rs. 6.5 crore more to its kitty over the four weekdays, thereby burying the last hope of a turnaround in the fortune of Players. The film’s first week collection stands at Rs. 21. 50 crore, which makes it a FLOP. In fact, the movie, released on 2000 screens, might set the unfortunate record of lowest collection for any film with such a wide release.
Meanwhile, Don 2 has emerged a HIT and is still attracting some crowds after three weeks.
The coming week would see no major release. Now, all hopes are pinned to Agneepath, starring Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt. The film will release on January 26, which is Thursday and is likely to benefit from the four-day weekend. Fingers crossed!
