 Raj Kanwar, the filmmaker who launched Shahrukh Khan in Bollywood, passed away in Singapore on Friday. He was 50.
Raj Kanwar had been undergoing treatment for kidney and had reportedly gone to Singapore for a kidney transplant. However, reports say there were complications after the transplant operation and he passed away around 11 am on Friday. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
Raj Kanwar began his career in Bollywood as an assistant director and made his directorial debut in 1992 with Deewana which introduced Shahrukh Khan to Bollywood. He directed Priyanka Chopra in Andaaz which won her the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. Raj Kanwar was also the first one to pair Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in his film Humko Deewana Kar Gaye. He also paired Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in the movie Dhai Akshar Prem Ke in the year 2000.
Raj Kanwar also wrote the story of many films that he directed. He was a noted producer as well. His last movie as director-producer was Sadiyaan which introduced Luv Sinha, son of Shatrughan Sinha.
Raj Kanwar’s body will be flown to Mumbai on Saturday. It will be placed for tributes and will be cremated on Sunday.
