Movie Review: ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance’ (3D) lacks spirit
The ApunKaChoice movie review of Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance. There are some films whose trailers look really promising but when you come out of the theatre after watching the movie, lugging the baggage of unfulfilled expectations, you end up feeling short-changed! Sadly for you (and us), Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance falls in the same category!

When one makes a sequel, usually, the reason behind it is the success of the preceding installment! However, Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance leaves such a bad taste in your mouth that you wish you never saw the sequel so that you could have at least saved yourself from souring the good memories from the original installment: Ghost Rider!

Well, the movie is still about Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) who’s struggling with the curse of being the Ghost Rider! He hides in a remote part of Eastern Europe, where a secret sect (Idris Elba) of the church asks him to save a boy (Fergus Riordan) from the devil. Now, what makes Johnny Blaze interested in that? A deal, yet again! If at all he saves the boy, Johnny’s curse of being the Ghost Rider shall cease!

Unlike the first part, the Ghost Rider makes an appearance just a few minutes following the beginning of the movie; and considering a runtime of 95 minutes, we suppose that was a wise decision! Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance features an animated preface for those who haven’t seen (or have perhaps forgotten) the Ghost Rider. That doesn’t really help our cause though!

The movie has too much of drama to deal with! But what one expects from the Ghost Rider series is hardcore and blazing (considering the burning skull) action! And though there’s a lot of sound and fury, infernal stunts and pyrotechnics, hardly anything qualifies to be called high-octane.

Also, the addition of one more dimension, 3D, was useless; hardly a couple of moments when you feel that the 3D was worth it! In fact, the 3D trailer of Wrath Of The Titans shown before the Ghost Rider sequel had better visuals! The movie also lacked the dark humour which was very much present in Ghost Rider!

Directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have done an average job! If a 95-minutes movie can give you hints of yawning, you know the movie had a lot of scope for improvement!

Speaking about the performances, Nicolas Cage has done a fine job! His performance in the sequence where he forcibly tries and stops the Ghost Rider from coming out of himself is remarkable! Violante Placido and Idris Elba, too, act well! Ciaran Hinds, as the devil, looks hideous, and that would perhaps be a compliment for him considering his role!

Overall, those who haven’t seen Ghost Rider should watch that first and then catch this one! Why catch this one? Because the way the movie has ended, we smell another Ghost Rider installment coming your way!

2D or 3D, watch any version of Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance, coz it’ll hardly make a difference! We really wish the Ghost Rider gets his bike serviced properly and comes back with a smoother, slicker ride next time!

Final verdict: We give it 2 stars out of 5
