|People may know the first of May as the Workers’ Day, but the fans of the Tamil superstar Ajith know it as the birthday of their favourite Thala.
Ajith turns 41 on Tuesday and has every reason to celebrate. His last film Mankatha broke records at box office last year and this year the buzz surrounding his upcoming film Billa 2 is maddening.
In the twenty years that Ajith has been in the south film industry, he has risen to the status of an iconic superstar. Though he made his debut as a boy in a small role in 1990, it was in the Tamil thriller Aasai in 1995 that he first caught everyone’s attention. Success didn’t elude him for long, but Ajith’s mettle as an actor came to the fore only in the late 90s and early 2000s when he emerged as an action hero with popular films including Amarkalam (1999), Dheena (2001), Villain (2002), Attagasam (2004), Varalaru (2006) and Billa (2007).
Today, on his birthday, Ajith chooses to make no new resolutions. All he wants is his fans to “be happy, live and let live”.
Some fans of Ajith have apparently been scathingly critical of his onscreen rival Vijay, but Ajith wants them to pipe down and not post any abusive messages about Vijay online.
On his birthday today, Thala has a message of love.
