By now you all probably know that the dancing damsel in the item song Imported Kamariya is the British hottie Scarlett Melish Wilson, but the presence of an item song in a Dibakar Banerjee film has taken many by surprise. But there’s a reason behind the number.
The song doesn’t start like a typical item song focusing on curves from one angle or another, but with a scene in a loo where one can see Emraan Hashmi and Abhay Deol exchanging glances -- funny, isn’t it! Well, besides the dancing firang, the buck-toothed Emraan Hashmi is also an entertainment factor in the song. Watch for him when he comes in the end of the video, asking Abhay Deol, “Foreigner ne kuch bola.. vaise in log nahate wahate nahi hain na”
Coming to the item babe, Dibakar Banerjee has already praised her for her dancing and looks. Scarlett Melish Wilson is a known face on TV because she appears in several commercials, and has danced well in this song, which is actually a satire on Indian people’s fascination for fair-skinned girls from abroad. You can understand why this is so with the lyrics, “Mori Imported Kamariya chaant ke aayee duniya, Welcome welcome karti India jaan le gayi.” Thus the item number has a situational relevance in the film.
The item song is composed by Vishal-Shekhar and is sung by the versatile Richa Sharma. Watch the song Imported Kamariya from Shanghai:
