It’s Sridevi versus English in director Gauri Shinde’s film English Vinglish, a delightful take on a housewife’s struggle and determination to learn the language despite all odds.
Through halting sentences, garbled pronunciations and mangled phrases, the vulnerability of an English-ignorant Shashi shines through, thanks to the terrific portrayal of this laddoo-making housewife by Sridevi. She’s scoffed at by her kids because she calls Jazz class, ‘Jhaaz claas’. Her husband (Adil Hussain) too thinks she was born just to make laddoos.
But then Shashi decides to learn the language and that too in the United States of America. “Why the United States of America and not the India,” she asks her instructor after being corrected for putting the definite article before the name of her country.
It’s far from a smooth ride for Shashi in the USA. At restaurants and at airports she feels hamstrung by her lack of English knowledge.
Is Shashi just destined to make laddoos for her family and be content scorned by them? Or will we see a transformation that will let her overcome this insecurity.
English Vinglish looks like a lighthearted film throbbing with emotions. It is written and directed by Gauri Shinde, wife of R. Balki who’s made films like Paa and Cheeni Kum.
Marking the return of Sridevi to films after 14 years, English Vinglish is slated to release on October 5. It’s a tri-lingual movie shot in three languages: Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
