|Sridevi’s comeback to the silver screen after 15 years was greeted with great support by the industry and rave reviews of her film English Vinglish by the critics, but the box office figures for the opening day are anything but flattering.
The film, directed by Gauri Shinde, opened to a lackluster response from the audiences on Friday. The occupancy ranged between 20 percent to 30 percent, and the first day business, as per early estimates, is in the ballpark of Rs. 2 crore, which is very below par.
Likewise Kismet Love Paisa Dilli, starring Mallika Sherawat and Vivek Oberoi, had a dull start though it showed a little promise at certain single screens.
The upshot is that both the films will have to show a turnaround in their collections on Saturday and Sunday to have a decent run at box office. Just looking a week back, even the Akshay Kumar-Paresh Rawal starrer Omg Oh My God! opened to a dull response, but picked up substantially over the weekend. What more, the film rounded off its first week at box office with a collection of just a little under Rs. 37 crore. The film’s business on Tuesday, a national holiday, was quite good.
The two new releases of this Friday would have to show a similar upward trend to have an impact at box office.
The next Friday would see multiple releases. Clashing at box office would be Aiyyaa, Bhoot Returns, Chittagong and Makkhi. A few other small budget films would have limited release.
