Karan Johar’s magic works at box office again. His new release Student Of The Year, starring three newcomers, is off to a flying start at ticket windows.
The film, introducing Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Malhotra, opened to a 50 percent to 60 percent response at theatres on Friday. The film released on about 1400 screens across the country, and going by the early estimates it has raked in a very good first-day collection ranging between Rs. 9 and Rs. 9.25 crore nett. The response was most heartening in NCR region where even single screen theatres drew in considerable footfalls.
The critics have been mixed about Student Of The Year, with some eulogizing it, while others labeling it a mere rehash of Karan Johar’s previous films, with some added inspiration from the hit youth films of Bollywood. But at the end of the day, it’s box office collections that matter and if the film picks up even 20 percent business on Saturday, it’s headed for a decent first weekend. So there’s every reason to celebrate for not just Karan Johar but the three newcomers as well.
