|Aamir Khan who so spiritedly highlighted the bane of honour killings in India through Satyamev Jayate is saddened by the murder of one participant who had appeared on the show.
Abdul Hakim, 28, was shot dead in Adoli village in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr last Thursday. Hakim and his wife Mehwish had appeared on Satyamev Jayate five months back in an episode on honour killings and had spoken about a possible threat to their life. The couple had married without their parents’ consent and were living under an NGO protection in Delhi for more than a year.
“I am very sad with this incident. When I got to know that Abdul has been killed, we felt very sorry. We had raised his issue, we had interviewed him. And I had seen the interview, I had seen how afraid they were,” Aamir Khan is quoted as saying by NDTV.
Abdul and Mehwish had married in 2009 and ran away from their homes fearing a backlash from their families. Allegedly, the couple faced a threat from the girl’s family because Abdul was not just poor but also from a ‘lower’ community.
Aamir Khan has talked to the police about the security of Mehwish who is nine-months pregnant with Abdul’s child. Reportedly, two people have been arrested in the case.
