Can Salman Khan’s 'Dabangg 2' beat 'Ek Tha Tiger' at box office?

Can Salman Khan’s 'Dabangg 2' beat 'Ek Tha Tiger' at box office?
The year 2012 ends with a loud roar at the box office as Salman Khan’s much-vaunted Dabangg 2 hits theatres this Friday. The questions regarding the film’s box office prospect and whether it can break the many records of this year’s topmost blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger have already got the trade pundits busy.

ApunKaChoice presents you the factors that can work in favour or against Dabangg 2 at the box office in beating the Yash Raj Films’ Ek Tha Tiger.

First things first. Ek Tha Tiger released on a holiday (Aug 15) and had a five-day weekend that also included the Eid holiday. Dabangg 2 doesn’t have the luxury of such a headstart as it releases on a working day (Dec 21) and has a normal three-day weekend. Secondly, Ek Tha Tiger released on 3,300 screens across India and 550 screens overseas, but Dabangg 2 will release at over 3,000 screens in India and 450 screens abroad.

With these odds stacked against Dabangg 2, the film still has a few things going for it. Firstly, it’s the sequel of the 2010 film Dabangg which was a runaway hit and the fans would surely be curious to see where the story goes in the second part. Secondly, Salman Khan’s character Chulbul Pandey is perhaps the best he’s got to play onscreen in his entire career. It’s a character tailor-made for him. Add to this the presence of Kareena Kapoor in the item song ‘Fevicol Se’.

So here’s what it comes down to. Dabangg 2 may not beat the opening-day collections of Ek Tha Tiger and may not storm into the 100 crore club in just five days as ETT did, but the film has the potential for a healthy long run at the box office. Which means, that its lifetime business might end up closer to ETT, and, if the film is indeed well-made, may even cross it.
