When Bejoy Nambiar used the retro hit Khoya Khoya Chand in an entirely new jazzy version for his film Shaitan, little did he know that the song will receive an overwhelming response from the music lovers. Willing to experiment with various genre of music, Bejoy has once again used another classic and has remixed it for his film David.
The song is the famous Mast Kalandar track, a Sufi qawwali number made popular by the Bangladeshi singer Runa Laila and many others. For David, Bejoy got singer Rekha Bhardwaj to render this hit track, rehashed by Mikey Mccleary. This track promises to lace 1975’s 'London' segment of David's story with its inimitable signature.
Mast Kalandar is picturized on the yesteryear beauty Sarika, who is shown singing this qawwali at a marriage ceremony. The audience then sees the hero Neil Nitin Mukesh as a debonair, stepping forward to greet the bride and the groom at the function.
The song is not only for the ears, but for eyes too. Neil Nitin Mukesh is shown visiting his ladylove (Monica Dogra) in the song, but she is getting married to someone else. Shot in black and white mode to suit the era of 1970s, Dama Dam Mast Kalandar is like a tribute to the golden era.
The video of the song is not without some racy moments; one can’t miss the steamy kissing scene between Neil Nitin Mukesh and Monica Dogra. But for us it’s Sarika who steals the thunder. The charming lady still looks the same with an inimitable glow on her face.
If you loved Khoya Khoya Chand from Shaitan, then you ought to hear Mast Kalandar in the voice of Rekha Bhardwaj:
