Movie Review: 'Table No. 21' is an interesting watch

Movie Review: 'Table No. 21' is an interesting watch
The ApunKaChoice movie review of Table No. 21. An intriguing concept is almost undone by an over-the-top characterization and sophomoric direction in Table No. 21, a film that ought to be seen for its many twists and turns and the grand revelation in the climax.

Tables have surely turned for Rajeev Khandelwal, for after posing uncomfortable questions to the participants on his show ‘Sach Ka Saamna’, he gets to face his own moment of truth and predicament in a similar, albeit fatal, game in this film by director Aditya Datt. He plays a 30-yr-old jobless, middle-class man Vivaan who is married to a pretty Siya (Tena Desae) for five years. On their all-expenses paid vacation to Fiji, they are invited by the resort owner Mr. Khan (Paresh Rawal) to play a game in which they have to answer just eight questions and perform as many tasks to win a whopping Rs. 21 crore.

The game will be webcast to 8 million viewers and the only catch in this game is, as Khan flamboyantly quips: “If you lie, you die.”

Not much of a nut to crack, thinks our hero and his wife. The duo accepts the offer, but find, to their horror, facing many bitter truths from their past followed by the tasks that test their commitment and love.

One of the appreciable things about the story of Table No. 21 is how it evokes greed and betrayal in the characters faced with insurmountable odds. For that, story-screenplay writers Shantanu Ray and Sheershak Anand deserve a pat on their back. Yet it can’t be overlooked that the screenplay swivels between sheer brilliance and banality, what with the gratuitous flashbacks the film veers into time and again. The pace, especially in the first half, could have been brisker, and one also notices the attempt on the part of the writers to cram in twists one too many to make the film an edge-of-the-seat fare for the audience.

All the characters, save for Paresh Rawal’s Mr. Khan, are fleshed out finely. Khan has been imbued with more style and flamboyance than Rawal can convincingly bring on without going over the top. Rajeev Khandelwal impresses with his earnest portrayal of a cocksure hubby getting beleaguered halfway through the game. Tena Desae is pretty and gets her bikini moment at a fetching Fijian beach. On the sidelines, Hanif Hilal doesn’t get any dialogues, but Asheesh Kapoor and Dhruv Ganesh chip in with creditable acts.

All in all, Table No. 21 is an engaging watch but it could have been much better if not for the amateurish direction by Aditya Datt.
