South siren Lakshmi Rai is game for challenging roles. The actress has expressed her desire to play the role of Delhi gang rape victim, Nirbhaya.
While the outraged janta is still demanding justice for the 23-year-old paramedical student, raped brutally in a bus on December 16, last year, the TV producers and filmmakers have already decided to use the tragic incident as an inspiration for their stories. Nirbhaya, as the victim was named by the media, will soon come alive in a Telugu film and her case will also be shown on a Hindi crime series on TV.
Actress Lakshmi Rai, who plays a fiery journalist in AMR Ramesh’s yet-to-release biopic of Veerappan, says that she wouldn’t mind playing the role of Nirbhaya on the big screen. The actress is moved by the story of the girl, and her struggle to stay alive.
“I don’t see why I shouldn't play a role like this. This is an issue that has affected many of the country's youth and has raised an alarm like never before. I want to do my bit by playing the victim of the Delhi gang-rape,” Lakshmi tells a daily.
According to Lakshmi Rai, by doing a film on Nirbhaya, she will be educating everyone about the dangers in the society. She further elaborates that she’d gladly take the daring role of the gang rape victim if someone approaches her with a script. Are the producers listening?
Telugu director Ramana Gaddam had announced that he will recreate Nirbhaya’s story in his forthcoming Telugu drama Nisha, and has already started the production work.
