|Tigmanshu Dhulia’s film Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns has got unanimous praise from critics but fared strictly average at the box office on the opening day.
The film, starring Irrfan Khan, Mahie Gill, Jimmy Shergill and Soha Ali Khan, opened to a dull response in the morning shows of Friday, but the business did pick up gradually in the evening shows. The response was best in NCR, Punjab and Rajasthan. By the end of the day, the film had managed to mint Rs. 3.51 crore nett, which is definitely not bad for a film of its stature.
The response is better than Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster that released in 2011. And if the footfalls don’t go down on Saturday and Sunday, the film can round off its opening weekend with a collection in the range of Rs. 12 crore nett.
The other release of the week, Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga, starring Sanjay Mishra, Pragati Pandey and Vishwa Mohan Badola, fared poorly on the opening day, clearly due to the lack of any big stars. The film’s first day business is expected to be between Rs. 10 and 15 lakh nett as per early estimates.
The lull at the box office is primarily due to the examination period that’s keeping a big chunk of the theatre going crowd away.
The coming week would see the release of three films, 3G-2013, starring Neil Nitin Mukesh and Sonal Chauhan, Jolly L.L.B. starring Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani, and Mere Dad Ki Maruti, starring Saqib Saleem and Rhea Chakraborty.
