The stage is all set and the fans have fastened their seatbelts as the Indian Premier League 2013 is going to kick off. The defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders face a stern test straightaway as they take on Delhi Daredevils in the opening encounter of the IPL season at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Both sides have some terrific match-winners in their arsenal and both would be raring to go and put their best foot forward.
A SWOT analysis will give us a clear idea of where they stand against each other.
Strength: A formidable batting line-up with batsmen like Mahela Jayawardene, David Warner and a quality pace bowling attack with Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav bowling in tandem.
Weakness: Kevin Pietersen’s injury and Virender Sehwag’s niggle will affect the balance of the top-order.
Opportunities: Delhi Daredevils has the opportunity to avenge their IPL 2012 defeat in the Qualifier’s match against IPL Champions Kolkata Knight Riders.
Threats: Delhi Daredevils will have to avoid complacency; they have always done well but have faltered in crucial games.
Kolkata Knight Riders:
Strength: High on confidence, Kolkata Knight Riders would like to start this edition with a bang and their strength lies in their team’s balance and variety. Jacques Kallis’ experience and Brett Lee’s ability makes them a force to reckon with.
Weakness: A lot of options in the arsenal can be a boon and bane at the same time as it can make the job of skipper Gautam Gambhir and team management difficult on whom to pick and whom to drop.
Opportunities: They can beat Delhi in the opening match and get psychological advantage over them as first match always sets the tone for the rest of the tournament.
Threat: The expectations are going to be sky-high from the KKR side as they are the defending champions and coping up with that pressure and performing will not be that easy.
