The second day of the IPL promises to be a high-voltage encounter as Mumbai Indians are taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
Both teams despite having some quality players in their ranks have failed to lift the IPL Trophy. There is one more thing common between these two sides and that is both of them will be led by two new captains Ricky Ponting and Virat Kohli.
For a cricket fan nothing can be more exciting than a deadly Lasith Malinga steaming in to bowl to Chris Gayle.
A SWOT analysis will help us know who stands where.
Strengths: The team has a solid batting line-up with batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Ricky Ponting and Kieron Pollard. Lasith Malinga’s aggression and Mitchell Johnson’s experience can come in handy with the ball.
Weaknesses: Ricky Ponting has a terrific record as an international captain with two world cup wins but the Aussie is right now captaining a multi-cultured side in a tournament of different kind and this could prove to be tricky.
Opportunities: Mumbai Indians is still in the hunt for the prestigious IPL Trophy and a win at the start will hold them in good stead for the entire tournament to come.
Threats: Chris Gayle’s ability with the bat can make the contest a one-sided affair. He can be ruthless and devastating to any side on his day and is in good form.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Strengths: The Virat Kohli-led side has one of the most fearsome batting line-up with batsmen like Chris Gayle, AB De Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan in the top-order. Muttiah Murlitharan’s skill and Zaheer Khan’s experience makes their bowling attack a potent force.
Weaknesses: This team on paper appears to be very formidable but pace spearhead Zaheer Khan looks a doubtful starter due to his calf injury.
Opportunities: Virat Kohli can present his case as the future captain of the Indian cricket team if RCB does well in IPL 2013.
Threats: Lasith Malinga’s toe-crushing yorkers at searing pace and slinging action can dismantle any batting line-up and make batsmen look helpless.
