The new IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad will make their debut in the IPL against Sahara Pune Warriors at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on Friday, 8pm. This team was earlier known as Deccan Chargers Hyderabad as the Deccan Chronicle group sold their team to the Sun TV and the team has a brand new name.
The name is new but the players are more or less the same as the Sunrisers are led by experienced Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara. The Pune Warriors side is playing in the IPL for the third time and this time they will be led by current Sri Lankan ODI and T20 captain Angelo Matthews.
A SWOT analysis of both the sides will help us know how well these two teams are pitted against each other.
Strengths: This team has some specialist T20 batsmen in their side like Kumar Sangakkara and Jean Paul Duminy. The fast-bowling department looks formidable as Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma start the bowling proceedings for their side.
Weaknesses: The confidence level of this team is not very high as they have not been a consistent side since IPL 2011. Absence of Shikhar Dhawan in the first match could prove costly as the southpaw was in great touch with the bat.
Opportunities: A winning start at their home ground will be a morale booster for the Sunrisers and the momentum will hold them in good stead.
Threats: A batsman like Yuvraj Singh will take any bowling attack to the cleaners and this could not augur well for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Sahara Pune Warriors
Strenths: This team is led by one of the best all-rounders of T20 cricket, Angelo Matthews. Yuvraj Singh and Ajantha Mendis are two specialist players in this format of the game with the bat and bowl respectively. Ross Taylor and Robin Uthappa’s presence makes the batting line-up stronger.
Weakness: Angelo Matthews is the third captain appointed by the Warriors in the third season. The team failed to make an impact in the first two seasons under Yuvraj Singh and Sourav Ganguly. Their death bowling is also a cause for concern.
Opportunities: Angelo Matthews has a lot of options to choose from and get a right combination to have a balanced side.
Threats: Pune Warriors should be careful of Dale Steyn as the Protea can run through any batting line-up with the ball in his hand. His pace and accuracy makes him lethal.
