Aashiqui 2, starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, released on about 1100 screens and is most likely to mint Rs. 5 crore to Rs. 5.5 crore net on its first day. The figure is pretty good for a film starring relative newcomers with not much success to show in the past.
The critics have been divided over Aashiqui 2, with some praising while others panning it. The occupancy in theatres has ranged between 40 percent to even 50 percent (in the evening). The film has fared better in UP, Rajasthan, CP Berar than in the multiplexes of Mumbai and Delhi.
But it’s the Robert Downey Jr. starrer Iron Man 3 that took lead at ticket windows. The film released not just in English but in four regional languages as well and it hit about 1100 screens across India, the same number as Aashiqui 2.
However, Iron Man 3 attracted more footfalls. The film is expected to rake in between Rs. 7 crore to Rs. 7.5 crore net on its opening day. Given the critical acclaim and the positive word of mouth (our correspondent witnessed a standing ovation at a theatre screening Iron Man 3), the collection is likely to zoom up on Saturday and Sunday.
So all in all, there’s every reason to cheer for exhibitors this weekend.
