|Go Goa Gone, India’s first zombie comedy, has failed to rise to the expectations and sagged at the box office with just Rs. 12.80 crore in its first weekend.
The film, starring Kunal Khemu, Vir Das, Puja Gupta, Anand Tiwari and Saif Ali Khan, released on 1150 screens and saw a lukewarm opening on Friday with a business of mere Rs. 3.75 crore net. The footfalls came in on Saturday and the collections spiked to Rs. 4.25 crore net and rounded off the weekend with Rs. 4.8 crore net on Sunday.
There are different ways one can look at these numbers. If you consider that Go Goa Gone is particularly a niche film with an appeal for the multiplex audiences and an ‘A’ certificate to boot, you might see the collections as fair to middling. But considering the hype surrounding the film and also the presence of an A-lister like Saif Ali Khan, the numbers are below par.
The other release of the week, Gippi, did strictly average for a film of its standing. Featuring newcomers Riya Vij and Jayati Modi, the film had just a Rs. 3 crore weekend. But this won’t pinch the producers Dharma Productions much as the film was made on a small budget.
Meanwhile, both Shootout At Wadala and Aashiqui 2 are still going strong at the box office. The two films are surefire HITS.
The coming Friday would see the release of Aurangzeb, I Don't Luv U and The Reluctant Fundamentalist.
