Director-producer Karan Johar will soon add ‘actor’ to his prolific profile. After writing reams on love, Karan is gearing up to play a villain opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Anurag Kashyap’s ambitious project Bombay Velvet.
Karan Johar has already worked with Anurag Kashyap on anthology film Bombay Talkies, and is excited to team up with the maverick again. According to Karan, the offer came to him out of the blue.
“It’s true that I’m acting in ‘Bombay Velvet’ and it’s unusual for me. I was blown away by the narrative... Since I'm playing an antagonist, there are shades of grey to my character,” Johar said in a statement.
For Anurag Kashyap, who has earlier directed director Tigmanshu Dhulia in Gangs Of Wasseypur, roping in Karan Johar happened by chance. The script of the movie clicked with Karan, and when Anurag promptly asked him for the role of the antagonist, Karan, to his surprise, said yes.
Karan will charge a nominal fee of Rs 11, and that money will be kept aside for the special effects and production, says Anurag.
Bombay Velvet is set against the backdrop of love, greed, violence and Jazz, and tells the story of how Bombay became a Metropolis. Historian Gyan Prakash’s book Mumbai Fables forms the basis for the movie which stars Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma as the lovers.
