Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundra has landed himself in a spot over betting in IPL matches. Shilpa, too, is not beyond suspicion.
Delhi police on Thursday claimed that Rajasthan Royal’s co-owner Raj Kundra has admitted to placing bets on his own team during the domestic T20 tournament, IPL, in the last 2-3 years.
Raj Kundra’s involvement in the betting scandal came to the fore after cricketer Siddharth Trivedi told police that Umesh Goenka, Kundra's business partner and friend, used to ask for information regarding team formation and pitches. The police on Wednesday questioned Raj Kundra for 10 hours.
Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar is quoted as saying, “He (Raj Kundra) has admitted to betting. He used to bet on his own team. We have also come to know that he has lost a lot of money in betting…He used to bet through (Umesh) Goenka, who is also a bookie.”
Police has reportedly confiscated the passport of Raj Kundra and told him not to leave the country.
Another disturbing development is that the police say that Umesh Goenka claimed during questioning that Ms Shetty also gambled during IPL.
In India, only betting on horse-racing is legal. Betting on all other forms of sports is illegal.
Meanwhile, Shilpa Shetty took to Twitter to slam the media for ‘casting aspersions’ and making up stories.
“To see news misconstrued and misreported. Please speak to the Real officials in charge and get the REAL story rather than your PAID (unreliable) sources...Just to reiterate, we will do all it takes to reach to the bottom of this "spot fixing case" and be of complete help till that happens!” Shilpa posted on the micro-blogging site.
She added: “Really upset with the media for casting aspersions without any proof, making derogatory statements..Uncalled for and will not be tolerated…Also to all the BREAKING NEWS channels 'Don't get into assumptions, we too are most curious to know who the culprit is'!”
Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra are co-owners of the IPL team Rajasthan Royals.
