Movie Review: Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara!

'Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara!' is strictly one-time watch, that too because of Akshay Kumar

The ApunKaChoice movie review of Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara!. If you aren’t sick of love triangles yet and find the plot of two grown up men locking horns over a pretty damsel intriguing, then my friends Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! won’t be as boring a watch to you as to those who’ve sworn off Bollywood’s oldest trick to tug at our hearts and kerchiefs.

But shouldn’t Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! be a 1980s’ crime thriller with games of one-upmanship played between bad guys with good hearts, as it was in that eminently watchable, Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi-propelled Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai in 2010? Well, this time director Milan Luthria commits what can only be called a ‘creative harakiri’ and makes it ‘Personal’ for the protagonists. They lock horns not for the top spot in the underworld, but for a chirpy, perpetually confounded starlet Jasmine. And she apparently strings the don along and also croons sweet nothings with his lieutenant.

Shoaib (Akshay Kumar) is the undisputed, unscrupulous don who unapologetically beds married women and bulldozes his opponents without losing a jot of his swagger. Hair slicked back and eye-shades ever in place just like his flickering grin, he is the embodiment of the unflappable baddie with a heart that throbs for a pretty actress Jasmine (Sonakshi Sinha). Aslam (Imran Khan) is the up and coming toughie from Dongri. As a kid, he was picked from the streets by Shoaib and groomed to be his confidante. All’s well until the two men fall for the same girl, Jasmine.

Expectedly and quite sadistically, director Milan Luthria and writer Rajat Aroraa bombard the audience with one hefty dialogue after another throughout the running course of this 160-minute marathon. It’s as if a scene isn’t complete unless a few oneliners are punched in. More often than not, they are kitschy, and make you chuckle at their cheapness. Sample this: Shoaib, the self-proclaimed lord of Bombay, quips in one dialogue, “Bambai huss rahi hai, Kumkum se Kimi Katkar ki tarah lag rahi hai!” Claps!

If this heavy and unending dialoguebaazi doesn’t get your goat, the plastic performances surely will.

Akshay Kumar, mercifully, is the sole silver lining in this botched sequel. There’s no denying the campiness in his act, but he aptly plays to the gallery with his somewhat affected style and swagger. Pitted opposite him, Imran Khan is mostly out of sorts, trying to stay relevant and justify his paycheck, but hardly lending any credence to his character. Sonakshi Sinha as the beauty with little brains just about passes muster and gives you some unintended laughs in an emotional outburst at the film’s fag end.

On the sidelines, Sonali Bendre as Shoaib’s former lover and Sarfaraz Khan as his best friend get little scope. Mahesh Manjrekar as his rival is a pain to watch.

Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! isn’t a patch on Milan Luthria’s 2010 flick. There’s hardly any action to speak of, hardly any edge-of-the-seat thrills, hardly any heart-throbbing drama.

Verdict: Watch it for Akshay Kumar, if you must.
