There is no stopping Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express at the box office. Going into its third weekend at theatres, the film is closing in on the 200 crore mark and inching towards the all-time grosser record of 3 Idiots.
The Rohit Shetty-directed movie has been shattering one record after another since its release on August 8, the eve of Eid. In its opening weekend itself, the movie broke five box office records, and is now on the cusp of overtaking Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger (Rs. 198.78 crore).
The latest box office figures are: Chennai Express has reached Rs. 197 crore net. That it will cross Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger is a foregone conclusion. What remains to be seen is whether it will go past Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots, which currently holds the top position as the highest grossing Hindi film ever (Rs. 202.47 crore).
Producer Ekta Kapoor who postponed OUATIMD from August 9 to 15 to make way for Chennai Express is “very angry” at being denied a wide release to her film on August 15. Reportedly, the producers of Chennai Express had reached a deal with Balaji according to which they were to withdraw their film from a number of centres to allow a good release to OUATIMD on Aug 15. They reportedly didn’t do that.
