Time to pop the bubbly! Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express has become the highest Bollywood grosser of all time by crossing Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots. On the other hand, John Abraham has little to cheer about.
John Abraham had made it clear from the start that his latest production Madras Cafe, directed by Shoojit Sircar and also starring Nargis Fakhri, is a film not made to plunder at the box office, but purely to satisfy his creative appetite. The film has been lauded by the critics unanimously, but the audience response was pretty lukewarm on first day.
Since the film is dogged by controversy down south and didn’t release in Tamil Nadu, the collections were expected to take a hit. The occupancy on Friday morning was low and the footfalls came in as the day progressed. As per early figures, the film made Rs. 4.90 crore net on its opening day. The collection is expected to go up on Saturday and Sunday. Expect the first weekend in the range of Rs. 20 crore.
On the other hand, Chennai Express has gone past Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots (Rs. 202.47 crore) to emerge the highest grosser of all time. The film’s collection so far is Rs. 202.67 crore and still counting. No wonder the film’s leading star Shahrukh Khan and director Rohit Shetty celebrated the success with the film’s crew (see photos).
The coming week would see the release of Prakash Jha’s film Satyagraha.
