|“And the Arab wins America. Classic,” read one of the racist tweets after the Indian origin girl Nina Davuluri, who was born in New York and considers herself an American, won the Miss America crown.
Now, India is not Arabia, as anyone who didn’t miss their geography class would know. Yet, no sooner was the tiara placed on the 24-year-old Nina’s head than the microblogging world swarmed with racial troll. The tweets called her an Arab, terrorist, and even linked her crowning to the 9/11 anniversary.
@LukeBrasilli posted on Twitter: “9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets Miss America?"
@Blayne_MkltRain: “Congratulations Al-Qaeda. Our Miss America is one of you.”
@jakeamic5 posted: “How the f*** does a foreigner win Miss America. She is a Arab?#idiots”
For the record, Nina Davuluri is NOT an Arab. Her father, a doctor, hails from Vijayawada in India’s Andhra Pradesh. She was raised in Oklahoma and Michigan and has always considered herself an American first.
However, there has been no letup in the misinformed racist tweets.
One user @emi_adkins tweeted, “It's called Miss America. Get outta here New York you look like a terrorist.”
Nina Davuluri, on her part, has reacted to these racist barbs with admirable grace.
“I have to rise above that (racist taunts)...I always viewed myself as first and foremost American,” Nina said at the press conference. She is the first Indian origin girl to win the Miss America crown.
