'Besharam' movie review: Ranbir Kapoor saves a trashy film

Toilet humour goes down the drain in Ranbir Kapoor’s 'Besharam'

The ApunKaChoice movie review of Besharam. One can’t but marvel at the humour quotient of the writer and director of Ranbir Kapoor’s latest film Besharam.

Here are a series of instances that are supposed to be funny. A stocky, constipated Rishi Kapoor plonks himself on a toilet seat to the accompaniment of high decibel farts followed by thunderous ejections. Funny? An unshaven (on the face) Ranbir Kapoor thrusts his pelvis in your face, and repeatedly scratches his shabby crotch that’s, by the way, padded with socks to enhance his manliness. Funny? To woo the ladies, Ranbir’s shirt is ripped open and his chest displayed in its hairy glory, and on another occasion his bare hip-line is partly shown, but alas for such a short time that it passes before you can scream “pause!”. Hot?

Not.

Truth is: Besharam in all its besharmi of toilet humour, scatological gags, and pedestrian pranks, is a film that tries too hard to shock you and sock you with its unapologetic crassness, crudeness, cheapness and what not. But sorry, Mr. Abhinav Singh Kashyap! The sight of a wobbly Ranbir Kapoor answering nature’s call in a sarson ka khet and crooning a Punjabi rendition of ‘Tujhe dekha toh yeh jaana sanam” isn’t LMAO stuff. Nor is Neetu Singh (playing a cop) taunting her hubby Rishi Kapoor (a cop) over firing blanks in bed all these years, and then him pulling out his gun (no metaphors here) amusing.

Even if the lame humour is underlooked, how does one forgive the frittering away of the golden, rare, chance of bringing the three stalwart Kapoors -- Ranbir, Rishi and Neetu -- together in a film by giving them roles that must make a rookie cringe?

Ranbir Kapoor plays Babli, a goodhearted orphan and car mechanic who steals cars to fund the orphanage. When his reputation as the dependable and irrepressible thief reaches the Hawala kingpin (Jaaved Jaafrey), he’s hired to twoc cars for the money launderer. Alas, our hero, given to his usual besharmi, steals the car of the very girl whose heart he wishes to steal.

Tara (Pallavi Sharda) is an upwardly mobile city girl who cares not a fig for some chest-hair flaunting car mechanic, but she gets involved because she wants her Merc back. In love with her, Babli decides to make amends and (as one last grand theft auto) decides to steal back Tara’s car from the Hawala hound.

Easier said than done. For the squabbling cop duo Chulbul Chautala (Rishi Kapoor) and Bulbul Chautala (Neetu Kapoor) are out to put an end to Babli’s twoccing exploits.

In all honesty, the story isn’t as trashy as the screenplay with all its puerility makes it. Sense of humour befitting a lunkheaded teen is on full display throughout the movie. The songs keep popping up like bad news. The action sequences offer little relief.

Ranbir Kapoor pitches himself headlong into crassness and delivers a performance that all but glosses over a trashy film. Neetu Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor chip in a few droll moments, but it’s the film’s leading lady Pallavi Sharda who’s splendidly miscast and fails to deliver a performance to make one sit up and take notice.

Lastly, for a director who made his debut with the eminently entertaining Dabangg, coming up with a film as irredeemably tacky and substandard as Besharam is a real shame.
