The ApunKaChoice movie review of ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’. Easily one of the most awaited films (and sequels) of this year, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug packs a visual punch. While the first instalment, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, was a roaring success at the box office, it did not stand up to the expectations of certain film critics. However, with ‘The Desolation of Smaug’, director Peter Jackson makes sure there are no warts in any department of filmmaking.

Continuing from where ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ left, ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ traces the journey of hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) who travels with a company of thirteen dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), and the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen). Thorin wants to reclaim the Kingdom of Erebor, taken over by Dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch). Though hopelessly smaller in size as compared to the dragon, the dwarves are fearless and ready to clash with the fire-breathing monster.

‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ begins with a flashback of Thorin and Gandalf discussing how they would need a hobbit to get hold of the Arkenstone seized by Smaug; the flashback doesn’t last for too long and we are brought back to the present where Bilbo and company are being chased down by the Orcs from the Carrock. Hardly had the dwarves managed to escape from the Orcs when they are captured by Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), a female elf, and Legolas (Orlando Bloom), the son of the Elf King Thranduil. Having luck by their side, along with Bilbo’s invisibility ring, the dwarves manage to cross Esgaroth, Dale, and finally reach their destination Erebor, The Lonely Mountain. What happens during the course of their journey is best left for you to watch at cinema halls.

With a runtime of 161 minutes, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ is a detailed adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel ‘The Hobbit’. Be it the escaping of the dwarves from the Elf Kingdom using empty wine barrels, or Dragon Smaug’s interaction with Bilbo, the film does complete justice to some of the most loved scenes of the novel.

Director Peter Jackson has hit a homerun with ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’. Despite its somewhat tiring length, there certainly are no loo breaks you can take. Right from the get-go the film grabs your attention and keeps you on the edge of your seats till the climax where Bilbo says, ‘What have we done!’ The film offers the right mix of laughs and some spine-chilling moments. Every time Tauriel and Legolas fight against the Orcs, you’ll have you heart in your mouth.

Coming to performances, ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ is a delicacy for cinephiles. Whether it is the lead actors Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage or Ian McKellen, the rest of the dwarves, or even the side actors, if your see them in the frame, you know they have given a stellar performance. Benedict Cumberbatch, too, deserves accolades as the voice of Smaug.

All in all, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ is a wonderful film that packs all the elements a movie buff craves for.

‘The Hobbit: There and Back Again’, see you in 2014.
