Movie review: ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ is a visual spectacle

‘300: Rise of an Empire’ is very watchable despite weak plot

The ApunKaChoice movie review of ‘300: Rise of an Empire’. A follow-up of Gerard Butler’s ‘300’, ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ might not have the best of plots but is still very watchable, thanks to its ‘bloody’ awesome CGI detailing; it is a visual spectacle.

Starring Sullivan Stapleton and Eva Green in lead roles, ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ is gory and dark. The film, centring on events that took place before, during, and after the events of ‘300’, opens with Xerxes beheading the dead body of the brave King Leonidas (Gerard Butler). Artemisia (Eva Green), Darius’ (Igal Naor) blue-eyed military commander, who made his son Xerxes a God-king, seeks vengeance on Greeks.

Xerxes’ (Rodrigo Santoro) Persian Army marches towards the major Greek city-states after its shallow victory over Leonidas’ 300. First on its path is the Democratic City of Athens led by Themistocles, the man who killed Darius with an arrow. Themistocles dreams of a united Greece and hopes all Greek states would join forces against the mighty Persian navy. And hence the war machine starts churning.

Though the majority of the film takes place on water and war ships, ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ was shot dry, and the water was digitally added during post-production. The film’s highlight akin to ‘300’ is its cinematography. The slow-motion shots are top-notch, creating some of the most amazing visuals you have ever witnessed.

Coming to the acting department, Eva Green as Artemisia indubitably steals the show and gives her best performance to date. You can hardly blink when she is on the screen. Green underwent major preparation for her role and trained four hours a day with a group of stuntmen from L.A. for three months before the beginning of the film’s shoot. Apart from that she continued training in sword fighting during the shoot; hard work bears fruit.

Sullivan Stapleton as Themistocles, too, gives a noteworthy performance, provided you don’t unfairly compare him to Gerard Butler. Lena Headey as Queen Gorgo and Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes though don’t have lengthy roles in the film they still manage to make their presence felt with their respective acts.

Director Noam Murro does a decent job. With ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ serving as a prequel, midquel and sequel to ‘300’, there was a lot of scope in the film that could have been tapped. A film should be as long or short as necessary, and in this case, 102 minutes is pretty short. The writers could have done a better job.

All in all, ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ might not be as breathtaking as one hoped it would be, but it is not a film you should miss. After all, you might soon hear the announcement of the third movie of the ‘300’ film series. Just saying!

Watch the film for its remarkable cinematography, Eva Green, and her exciting chemistry with Stapleton.
