Movie Review: ‘Bewakoofiyaan’ is a cheery rom-com

'Bewakoofiyaan' cheers you up with its light wit

The ApunKaChoice movie review of 'Bewakoofiyaan'. Ladki and kadki rarely go together. And if you add a khadoos baap to the picture, more’s the pity for the poor bloke. Director Nupur Asthana’s Bewakoofiyaan is one such cheery tale of pyaar, paisa and pa that though not unseen before, is nevertheless a fun watch for its frothiness.

Mohit Chaddha (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a cool and confident Delhi lad with a cushy job and a fashionable, go-getter girlfriend Mayera Sehgal (Sonam Kapoor). His love story hits the first bump when Mayera’s father turns out to be a cantankerous and snooty retired IAS officer V K Sehgal (Rishi Kapoor), who doesn’t want his super smart, super successful girl hooking up with an underachiever in an airline company.

The second blow comes when Mohit loses that very underachieving job as well. Recession strikes and Mohit and Mayera see their love as a potential casualty unless they trump up a few lies to put across a rosy picture to Mayera’s perpetually peeved father. In trying to please the man, Mohit becomes the source of unending bewakoofiyaan.

The film borrows scraps from Hollywood’s ‘Meet The Parents’ and ‘Father of the Bride’, but stays very much Bollywoodish in spirit, thanks to the very desi nuances (like the ‘girl earns more than the boy’ snide) that writer Habib Faisal is deft at sprinkling his stories with. Where Faisal messes up is in not giving a clear direction to his tale. Is this the story of a guy trying to win over the girl’s father? Is it about the male insecurities in the face of female success? Is it about the clash of generations? May be all, but the story does get overwrought despite the short running time of a little under 2 hours.

Director Nupur Asthana does a swell job of yoking it all together into an easy breezy rom-com without any pretense of making a statement on relationships.

Slipping with ease into the bubbly groove is Sonam Kapoor as the uptown girl who stands by her jobless boyfriend and stands up to her overbearing father. Ayushmann Khurrana as the unemployed, crestfallen, humbled Mohit fits the part well. It’s Rishi Kapoor who, yet again, walks with applause as the grumpy, snappy, name-dropping V K Sehgal. He is any boyfriend’s worst nightmare. Yet, there’s a distinct charm and buoyancy to his character, particularly in a scene where he learns to operate a computer and play a video game.

'Bewakoofiyaan' has writer Habib Faisal’s characteristic wit that’s not of the LOL potency, but leaves you in chuckles at best. With lilting music, easy-on-the-eye cinematography, the film makes for a watchable date flick.

Rating: **1/2
