None of the three new releases managed to wrest away crowd from 2 States, which is still going strong and headed towards the 100 crore club.
Much was expected from Revolver Rani, particularly after the superb box office run of Kangana Ranaut’s last film Queen. The film’s wacky, weird treatment was also one of the pullers. Alas, disappointment was in store for 'Revolver Rani' as it misfired from day one. The opening weekend business of the movie stands close to Rs. 6 crore net, which is way below what one expected.
The other release that had caught a lot of attention was ‘Show Man’ Subhash Ghai’s Kaanchi, introducing a new girl named Mishti in Bollywood.
'Kaanchi' made close to Rs. 2.4 crore net in the opening weekend, again a figure not up to the mark. Subhash Ghai, however, is optimistic that the film will hold ground in the coming days as the positive word of mouth spreads.
The surefire disaster of the weekend was actor Rajeev Khandelwal’s Samrat & Co. The film was rejected outright by cinegoers and couldn’t even mint Rs. 1 crore in its opening weekend.
Meanwhile, '2 States' continued to be the crowd-puller in its second weekend. The movie starring Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor rounded off its ten days at the Indian box office with a figure of Rs. 76.30 crore net. The film is already a hit and headed for the 100 crore club.
The coming Friday would see the release of Purani Jeans. The box office, by the way, is slipping into the annual lean phase when big releases stay away as IPL season peaks. The big releases will begin to come out with the onset of June.
