Movie Review: ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ is a game changer
The ApunKaChoice movie review of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’. Certain moviegoers complain of superhero films being all about action, and no storyline. ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ is a game changer. The latest offering from the X-Men film franchise will be appreciated by all -- those who long to watch breathtaking action on the big screen, as well as those who hate compromising on the script. This film is a must-watch.

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ stars an ensemble cast, including celebrated names like Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Peter Dinklage. In the film, Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) send Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) in the past to change the events that led to the war between humans and mutants.

The year is 1973; Peter Dinklage’s Bolivar Trask invents Sentinels -- a range of robots designed to hunt and kill mutants. However, in the dystopian future of 2023, Sentinels are not only eliminating mutants from earth, but humans too. With the help of Kitty Pryde’s (Ellen Page) ability to send mutants in the past, Professor X decides to travel back in time and alter the events of 1973, but since his body won’t be able to take the physical damage caused in this process, Wolverine volunteers.

Waking up in 1973, Wolverine must now find the younger Charles Xavier, Erik and Raven, and end the war before it ever begins -- mindboggling concept, without a doubt.

The action sequences, though few than one expects in a superhero film, are grand. We rubbed our eyes in disbelief seeing Magneto raise the RFK Stadium and deposit it around the White House.

Director Bryan Singer has done a remarkable job with ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’. With so many superheroes sharing screen space and the film centring on both the past and present, it could have gone either way. Singer not only manages to keep the film’s visual appeal intact, but also ensures there’s no dearth of laughter and emotion, hitting the right note.

The performances by the cast members is appreciable. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender’s chemistry is one of the highlights of the film, like it has always been in the previous X-Men instalments. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is irreplaceable. It’s been 14 years since we are seeing him as Wolverine and we just cannot think of anyone else playing the mutant with the claws. Be it his sly one-liners or enviable display of masculinity, Hugh Jackman was born to play this role.

Academy Award-winner and everyone’s BFF Jennifer Lawrence as Raven/Mystique is adorable. Rumours are rife Miss Lawrence would be seen in a solo X-Men film. How awesome would that be!

Honestly speaking, what we were looking forward to watching the most was Peter Dinklage as the baddie Bolivar Trask, and he doesn’t disappoint at all. ‘The Imp’ plays Trask to perfection and the 70s’ hairstyle, and the moustache, look really cool on him.

BTW, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which makes extensive use of post-credit scenes, has something in store this time as well. So don’t just start walking out of the cinema hall praising the movie as soon as it ends. Remember, patience bears fruit. Tee-hee.

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ has all the trappings a summer superhero film should have. So go out, watch the film and enjoy the experience.
