Sundance time for Aamir Khan
A rare honour

His disdain for popular award shows in Mumbai is no secret, but when it comes to award functions and film festivals “that have credibility” (as he says it) Aamir Khan is game.

No surprises then that the ace Khan is thrilled after his home production Peepli Live, which has been directed by a newcomer named Anusha Rizvi, was chosen for the competition section for the upcoming Sundance Film Festival to be held in the US state Utah from January 21-31.

Chaired by the Hollywood stalwart Robert Redford, the festival honours independent filmmakers from across the world. And it’s a rare honour for Aamir’s production ‘Peepli Live’ to be selected for the competition section out of 1000 films that were in the running.

“I am very happy for director Anusha Rizvi and her young team as I believe it’s the first Indian film to be selected there,” Aamir is quoted as saying by a tabloid.

The film, set in a village named Peepli in rural India, is a satire about debt-ridden farmers. It has Raghuvir Yadav playing the lead role. In Aamir’s words, the film has “amazing humour” but is “heartbreaking” at the same time.

We hope it does clinch a few awards at the Sundance fest.
