Veer - Music Review

Fair to middling

Salman Khan’s films usually have hummable songs, but the music of some of his latest films has failed to live up to our expectations. Now, the actor is set to release his magnum opus Veer and since it’s a Salman film, who else than his good buddies Sajid-Wajid to compose the music.

The music is out and some of the songs have started doing the rounds. Is it impressive? Did composers try to do something different or did they tread the beaten path? Let’s ‘veer’ towards the six tracks.

The first song Taali is doused in rustic flavor; distinct Rajasthani folk music dominates the song. The team of Sukhwinder Singh, Sonu Nigam, Wajid and Neuman Pinto have delivered this fast-paced, high-on-beats track. Very situational, this song suits the title ‘Veer’. The song’s solo version in the voice of Sukhwinder sounds equally good.

Next in the line is Surili Ankhiyon Wali, a sugary-sappy track crooned by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The song is unquestionably the best in the album and is emerging as a popular one on the charts. This song also shows how Sajid-Wajid are trying to re-invent themselves as composers. There is another version to the song where Shreya Ghosal and Suzanne D’Mello give company to Rahat to belt out another romantic track.

Like a typical Sajid-Wajid track, love ballad Salaam Aaya takes you ten years back, but the song, though lacking the contemporary feel, is not bad but passionate to its core and then there are singers Roop Kumar Rathod, Shreya in their usual style. The song scores well if not bowl us over.

The album was shaping up well, but when one gets to hear Meherbaniyan, jaws drop with disappointment. The retro feel of the song may be because of the movie’s story but the composers couldn’t do justice to the song’s feel. It simply falls flat.

However, a silver lining comes in the form of thumri Kanha. A classical piece crooned by the versatile Rekha Bharadwaj, it takes you to another realm. Music buffs would enjoy the song. On the mike are also Toshi brothers who in their Sufiana andaz, make the song worth listening.

The Instrumental track has nothing much to offer, the retro zap is similar to that of Meherbaniyan track.

So, the album of ‘Veer - The epic love story of a warrior’ offers a mélange of different genre, apt for its periodic setting. Sajid-Wajid has shown what they are capable of, but even if the numbers are melodious and soothe your senses, they will gradually lose appeal.

Thus the album is a bit bland.
