Kathryn Bigelow creates Oscar history The Hurt Locker
There could not have been a more befitting commemoration of the International Women’s Day. On the evening of March 7 in Los Angeles history was created at the 82nd Academy Awards as Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman director in the Oscar history to win a golden man statuette for her movie The Hurt Locker.

In her award acceptance speech, Bigelow said: “This really is... There's no other way to describe it, it's the moment of a lifetime. First of all, this is so extraordinary to be in the company of such powerful, my fellow nominees, such powerful filmmakers who have inspired me and I have admired for, some of whom, for decades. And thank you to every member of the Academy. This is, again, the moment of a lifetime.”

Bigelow’s ex hubby, filmmaker James Cameron was also nominated in the same category for Avatar.

In the 82 year history of Oscars, only three women directors before Kathryn have been nominated - Lina Wertmueller for ‘Seven Beauties’ in 1976, Jane Campion for ‘The Piano’ in 1993 and Sofia Coppola for ‘Lost In Translation’ in 2003.

Earlier, Kathryn also became the first woman director to win the Directors Guild of America award for ‘The Hurt Locker’.

Kathryn began her film career in 1978 with the short film ‘The Set-Up’ and over the years went on to direct a number of films, the popular among them being the horror film ‘Near Dark’ (1987) and Point Break (1991). She was married to James Cameron from 1989 to 1991.
