|Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has announced his ambitious film ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ on the life of Indian athlete Milkha Singh and the names of several Bollywood stars are being bandied about for the role of the eponymous hero.
The two obvious names are - Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachchan.
But Milkha Singh, the athlete himself, is in favour of Akshay playing the role.
“I strongly feel that my role should be played by Akshay Kumar. Being a Punjab da puttar, he has the right physique and also acts well,” Milkha, popularly known as ‘The Flying Sikh’, is quoted as saying by a tabloid.
Milkha has sold the rights for his lifestory to Mehra for a shockingly meagre sum of Rs. 1. The story would be penned by Prasoon Joshi. Mehra says he will finalize the actor only after the script is finished.
The Story of Milkha Singh
As a boy, Milkha Singh was witness to the killing of his parents during India’s partition. He ran to save his life. And as a grown up man he ran to bring honour to his country. In 1958, Milkha Singh won a gold medal at Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, UK. He also won gold medals in 200m and 400m races at Tokyo Asian Games. In the Rome Olympics in 1960, he was leading till the final round of the 400m event, but then made a gross error of judgement and ended up coming fourth.
