Raajneeti - Music Review

Riveting Songs

Music is certainly not the high point of Prakash Jha’s films but the director makes an exception with his multi-starrer Raajneeti in which he teams up again with the composer Wayne Sharp, whose knowledge of Indian music isn’t hampered by his foreign origin.

So, here is the American music director with some classical, soulful compositions in ‘Raajneeti’ and the first track Mora Piya is enough to prove his mettle. This quasi-classical number sung by Aadesh Srivastava instantly makes its way to a listener’s heart. The soothing, lilting track has a surreal feel. Its lingering melody and dawdling cadence sticks to your mind.

Mora Piya also has a trance version vocalized by Kavita Seth. It’s quite an experimental track and music buffs will find it tempting enough, just like the original. The Twilight remix by DJ Chantz just adds to the solemn mood of the album and gives us another riveting number.

Like a waft of gentle breeze, Mohit Chauhan’s voice mesmerizes you in the song Bheegi Si Bhaagi Si Hawa and soon if you have started imagining the romantic hinterland then it’s to the credit of the singers who have rendered this simple number in such a fascinating way.

Ishq Barse tries to bring three elements together and that is folk, classical and Bollywood music. Hamshika Iyer’s sensuous voice with Pronob Biswas’s folk-induced lines and Swanand Kirkire’s classical vocals just give the song the required zing. The Bombay Bounce Club remix of the same song is another mind-blowing track, thanks to DJ Llyod and Discreet.

Inspired by India’s national anthem, Dhan Dhan Dharti is poignant and for obvious reasons evokes a sense of respect and patriotism for the nation. Singer Shankar Mahadevan has again done a remarkable job. And filling your soul, mind and body with deep sense of devotion for your country once again is the singer Sonu Nigam who gets to sing the Reprise version of Dhan Dhan Dharti. A passionate track.

After listening to the album, we do expect and hope for music director Wayne Sharp to keep composing songs for more films as well. The ‘Raajneeti’ album is not overloaded with songs. A simple musical attempt has given us four wonderful songs and some memorable remixes.

It’s the music that enthralls us.

Ok.. that was a cool and an honest review. As you said in review (last second paragraph) - "Inspired by India’s national anthem, Dhan Dhan Dharti is poignant and for obvious reasons evokes .............. " I think you should say " Inspired by National SONG" (as Dhan dhan dharti is inspired by Vande mataram - Our National Song, NOT Anthem) Anyways,Thanks for the review. Mora Piya rocks.. I just just love that ..
