'Kites' off to a superb start

Critics may be divided over Hrithik Roshan-Barbara Mori’s latest film Kites, with some slamming and others recommending it, but that has not stopped the movie buffs from queuing up outside the box office at multiplexes and single screen theatres across India. The movie has taken a mammoth start, with as many as 10,000 shows on the first day of its release.

The Anurag Basu-directed film has had the biggest worldwide release for any Indian film. It released on 2,000 screens in India and 500 screens overseas. The special paid previews on Thursday mostly ran to packed houses and tickets have been booked in advance for the whole weekend at many multiplexes in Delhi and Mumbai.

The film’s producer Rakesh Roshan said in a statement: “I am overwhelmed by the response both in India and abroad.”

Hrithik, who is the film’s leading man, added: “My dad and I are extremely grateful to Reliance BIG Pictures for the extraordinary release given to Kites worldwide and the tremendous love showered on the film by cinegoers.”

According to trade reports, the movie is going to rake in the moolah during the weekend, though its boycott in Karnataka will affect its domestic collections. The most crucial for ‘Kites’ is to hold on to good collections during the next week and weekend. Given the fact that there is no big release next Friday, it might do that and emerge a hit.
