Harishchandrachi Factory - A film on Phalke for Oscars
The Father of Indian Cinema is not forgotten and that’s why a biopic on Dadasahab Phalke was unanimously chosen by the Film Federation of India’s jury headed by veteran actress Asha Parekh as the official entry to the Oscars for the Foreign Film Category.

‘Harishchandrachi Factory’, a low budget Marathi movie by Paresh Mokashi is about how Phalke made the nation’s first motion picture ‘Raja Harishchandra’. This is Mokashi’s debut film and after getting the news he is not only excited but shocked. “Forty-odd films were screened for the Oscar committee selectors of the Film Federation of India. This film remains not just a Marathi subject but gets accepted for the film it is. That is what makes me very happy,” the excited director was quoted as saying.

Other films in competition for the Indian entry were movies from Bollywood such as Dev D, Dilli 6, Fashion, New York, Kaminey and the yet to be released, What’s Your Raashee?. The much acclaimed Marathi film, ‘Mee Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy’ was also in the running and the only competition from the south was in the form of T Hariharan’s Malayalam film ‘Pazhassi Raja’ starring Mamoothy.

‘Harishchandrachi Factory’ is the second Marathi film after Shwas (2004) to get selected for the Oscars and is slated for December release.
