Lacks magic

A Bollywood version of a larger-than-life story, Sujoy Ghosh’s Aladin is a movie about magic and dreams. If Ritesh Deshmukh plays the brave Aladin, handsome Amitabh Bachchan is the genius genie.

Sensational music composer duo Vishal-Shekhar, who have worked with Sujoy right from his first film, were of course the obvious choice for giving music to its six songs. The album has two remixes by DJ Suketu. So does this film promise magical songs just like its theme and name?

The album starts with Gennie rap, obviously it’s picturised on Amitabh. Big B also gets to sing this peppy rap song, while sassy vocals of Anushka Manchanda support him behind the mike. DJ Suketu’s fast remix version of the song isn’t very innovative.

The fun-filled track Tak Dhina Din draws inspiration from the tunes of the 80s. After one hearing you can remember many similar songs from the decade like Bach Ke Rehna or the one from ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’. Nevertheless, the treatment of this feisty number is very contemporary.

The trend of using a rustic song is common these days. Ore Saawariya is such a number in the album. Big B sings with zeal and who else better than Sudesh Bhonsle to croon this song along with him. The mellifluous voice of Shreya Ghosal adds drama. The Remix version of the song by DJ Suketu has again nothing much to offer besides beats and fast rhythm.

After listening to You May Be, one begins to day-dream. This song justifies the reason why I used the term ‘sensational’ for Vishal-Shekar. The talented duo has also sung this dreamy, magical song. Love this! The chorus of singers Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan, Vishal Dadlani and Sunidhi Chauhan have come together to sing Bachke O Bachke. But the song falls flat as it fails to impress.

The movie’s villain Sanjay Dutt also finds a place in the album as he sings the last song Giri Giri. Despite its average music and a middling tune, the track works because of Sanjay’s voice.

The verdict is - nothing exceptional, not-so-bad. Your can hear the album once. But most of the songs lack magic to please your eardrums.

Rating - 4/10
