Swimming with sharks comes quite naturally to Akshay Kumar, it seems. He first did it years ago in Ankhen. Now, in director Anthony D'Souza’s underwater adventure thriller Blue, Akshay takes the dive again to be in the company of the dangerous killers of the deep.
Shooting the underwater stunts was so risky that Akshay describes ‘Blue’ as the most dangerous film of his career.
“This experience has pushed just about everyone involved to their absolute limits - from the producer's bank balance, to the director's maximum efforts for his first baby, which just happens to be the most dangerous movie I've ever been a part of,” Akshay wrote on his blog akshay.bigadda.com.
A dedicated team of professionals were at work to make sure that everything under water went according to the script.
D'Souza brought down Hollywood's renowned underwater cinematography specialist Pete Zuccarini, who shot for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series, to shoot underwater scenes. James Bomalick of ‘Indiana Jones’ fame was also engaged to choreograph the action sequences in the movie.
“What I loved shooting about this film other than the extreme stunts, the pressure and hardcore diving sessions with all those hungry sharks around, was the fact that I got to work with the most talented team I've ever come across,” Akshay wrote.
So eager was Akshay at pushing his own limits that he almost became a human dolphin for the crew.
“I trained myself to be able to handle whatever these guys could throw at me. When there is an entire crew waiting for you to nail a shot, you do not want to go wrong. I respected their time and effort and they respected my attempt at being a human dolphin for them,” he revealed.
With its budget hovering close to Rs.80 crore, ‘Blue’ is said to be India’s most expensive film ever.
Starring Akshay, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta, Zayed Khan and Katrina Kaif (in a cameo), the film is about a treasure that lies buried deep at the bottom of an ocean. Each character wants to get his or her hands on the treasure. Some wouldn’t mind risking their life; others won’t wink before taking another’s. There’s greed, double-crossing, betrayal and the inevitable clash as each character’s dark shades come to the fore.
The film releases this Friday.
