Following its rule book, the Censor Board has shown no leniency towards director Madhur Bhandarkar’s next stab at realism - Jail.
The movie has already made headlines because of a nude scene in which Neil Nitin Mukesh, the film’s leading man, drops his pants. Fearing a reprisal from the Censor Board, Madhur Bhandarkar had pixilated the nude scene before referring the film to the board.
However, ‘Jail’ has now been cleared with a U/A certificate after seven cuts and modifications. Firstly, Neil’s nude scene will be blurred more. Secondly, a lovemaking scene between Neil and Mugdha Godse has been axed. Other scenes that have come under Censor scissors include a homosexual scene, a sex joke, and a few smutty dialogues which the inmates in jail are shown speaking.
Ideally, Bhandarkar would have loved to get a U certificate, and he had a discussion with the Censor officials when he was told to make changes. But eventually, the National award winning director settled for the U/A certificate after the cuts.
‘Jail’ tells the story of a man’s plight inside a prison. The film not just provides a peek into the lives of people inside the prison, but also makes a telling statement about the judicial system.
