In the wake of the Cricket fever sweeping through India, we had asked our readers in the ApunKaChoice poll to vote for their favourite film on cricket. Unsurprisingly, Aamir Khan’s home production Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India won by a considerable margin.
A film on sports usually follows a formulaic template. Mostly a triumph-of-the-underdog saga, the plot in such films takes the beaten track as the protagonist(s) overcome the mighty odds to emerge victorious in the end. Following this very format, Hindi film industry has produced a number of cricket flicks that have ranged from sublime to ridiculous.
The first name that pops into mind is that of the Ashutosh Gowariker directed Lagaan which took us back to the late nineteenth century with a story about a ragtag team of Indian villagers taking on a proficient English team in a match of cricket to seek a waiver of land tax (lagaan).
Expectedly, in our poll, Lagaan got 59 percent votes from the readers to emerge as the most favourite film on cricket.
